Smart Maintenance - Industrie 4.0 for maintenance and service
At present it has become increasingly clear: without maintenance that meets actual requirements, the goals associated with Industrie 4.0 and Smart Factory will not be achieved. Smart Maintenance is becoming the enabler and driver of digitalization in companies. Not only the increasing complexity of production facilities poses new challenges for maintenance. In Germany, as well as in Europe as a whole, the number of newly emerging industrial parks and other largescale projects is rather limited. They are being built elsewhere in the world. Therefore the companies located here are challenged to produce competitively with their existing facilities.
This can only be achieved through a transformation process that upgrades and updates the existing systems to meet the current requirements. Transformation not revolution is the key word here. But this transformation can only succeed if these capacities and competencies are actually available in the own company. Those resources can usually only be found in maintenance, nowhere else in the company.
Therefore it is significant to put these employees in a position to manage this transformation process. This includes technological aspects such as sensor technology, mobile solutions, virtual (VR) and augmented reality (AR) and last but not least 3D printing. But the most significant factor is the involvement of the employees with the company’s own requirements and goals. The digital transformation can only be successful if it adequately takes into account humankind as the creative source and as the most important component of the networks.
As one of the leading drivers of Industrie 4.0 and digitalization, the Fraunhofer Group has extensive expertise in the technological and organizational challenges of maintenance and service.
